Catching Lightening In A Bottle

Trauma is not an event. Rather, it is the nervous system injury from any experience that your brain and body did not have the resources for, and it leaves you in a state of hypervigilance. All symptoms from trauma reflect a nervous system that has not recovered from the shock. The event disrupts the natural rhythm of the body’s functioning and will often leave a person’s nervous system stuck in that state of being, experienced through implicit sense. This means the memories lie deep in our nervous system rather than in our conscious awareness, and these memories present themselves in fleeting moments: a shiver down the spine when you feel a presence behind you, an overwhelming emotion at the presence of a smell that is otherwise unfamiliar, or just a nagging feeling that you cannot explain.
Healing from deep, early developmental trauma requires bypassing the neocortex, as cognition alone cannot reach the earliest layers of the nervous system. Because you cannot simply think your way to wellness, effective recovery requires accessing parts of the mind beyond conscious thought. In this way, true transformation is like catching lightning in a bottle—seizing the precise, fleeting moment to transform that deep, trapped energy into lasting change. The impact of trauma on the body is not a mystery in the world of healthcare, and to be sure, neither is how to heal it. The human body has all it needs to be well, to heal from injury, and to function at peak shape. While it is not a mystery, trauma healing is all about science.

Trauma healing is not linear. There is no script or protocol. But it is an exact science, as mentioned above. Recovering from trauma necessitates the opportunity to reprocess, or fully process, the event that caused the injury. Giving your brain and nervous system a “do-over” so-to-speak. While this doesn’t require a complete conscious recollection of the event that caused harm, it does involve tapping into those implicit senses mentioned above. Healing from trauma is like catching lightning in a bottle: the art of claiming that precise, electric second to rewrite your path forward.
If you are ready to stop merely managing symptoms and start rewiring your nervous system for true freedom, The Healing Point’s Neuroexperiential coaching program—a specialized spinoff of my therapy practice—is designed for you. Together, we move beyond the limitations of talk therapy to access the deep, somatic layers where your story is actually held. By mastering the science of the “do-over,” you can reclaim your natural rhythm and turn your survival instincts into a source of profound strength. Don’t just wait for the storm to pass—learn how to capture the spark that changes everything.
